Structural characterization of domain-domain interactions in autophagy

This project focuses on characterizing the interaction of non-canonical LIR sequences with members of the LC3/GABARAP autophagy modifier family and the question how specificity is achieved, for example by additional post-translational modifications. Furthermore, the interactions and structures of complexes regulating the autophagic removal of mitochondria in C. elegans will be investigated. Finally, selective binders/inhibitors for all six human LC3/GABARAP proteins will be generated and validated based on Designed Ankyrin Repeat Proteins (DARPins).
